Karekare Residency

FROM THE ARCHIVE - EDEN ARTS ANNOUNCES NEW RESIDENCY

This article appeared in the Spring 2017 issue of Art News.

Historic Karekare homestead to be made available to artists

"Rounding off its 30thanniversary year in style, the Eden Arts Trust is pleased to launch a new 3-month residency commencing in 2018 at Karekare Beach on the West Coast of Auckland.

The West Coast has long been an inspiration to artists and the intention is to provide a space that provides an opportunity for an extended period of creativity. Karekare beach itself provided the atmospheric setting for scenes from Jane Campion’s 1993 film The Piano.

The 1895 Karekare House was the much loved family home of highly regarded children's author Dorothy Butler and her eight children. The historic property remained in the Butler family for over 50 years until its sale last year. The new owners have a strong affiliation with Eden Arts and have also met with members of the already vibrant Karekare arts community regarding their plans to continue the creative tradition long associated with the house. Their generous offer of accommodation in the original homestead will be supported by a stipend offered by the Eden Arts Trust. The residency will be offered for a three-month period during which time the artist will produce a body of work culminating in an exhibition and artist talk."

NEWS FROM THE RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

EXHIBITION - OUT OF KAREKARE

Opening on Wednesday 21 February 2024, we are proud to showcase our most recent artists-in-residence (those from 2022) in a group exhibition at Season Gallery.

ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE 2023/ 2024

We congratulate the following artists who were selected for the 2023 Karekare House residency programme. Unfortunately as a result of the major devastation to the Karekare community in the wake of cyclone Gabrielle, our programme had to be put on hold in 2023. We look forward to resuming the residencies in 2024. Please watch this space...
