The traditional gala event of the Eden Arts calendar is held in March each year and brings together a large number of recognised Auckland artists who draw and paint from the Essex Road Reserve. The completed works are auctioned the same day to provide funds for community arts initiatives.
Around 40 visual artists work in the park during the day. Talk to the artists or watch an artwork progress from start to finish. Children’s workshops are offered. The work of well known artists can be won in the raffle. It’s a great day with live music, entertainment and various activities to enjoy.
At the end there is a chance to purchase the works created, not to mention all the excitement of
a live auction!
Artists in Eden is Auckland’s longest running art event of its kind and a fabulous opportunity to enjoy some of the art talent which is such an integral part of the Mt Eden community. Entry is free and the public is encouraged to chat to the artists as they work.
The day includes live music, children's art activities, an art raffle, two very special collectors' item collaborative sketch books to bid for at auction, and of course the chance to bid for artworks produced by artists working on the day. Participating artists include longstanding favourites such as Peter Gibson Smith, Belinda Griffiths, John Horner, Neal Palmer, Peata Larkin, Claudia Pond Eyley and Rebecca Tune, as well as newer artists such as Brendon Leung, Tonina Ngatai and Brittany Walker Smith.
Artists in Eden Day is the flagship event of the Eden Arts Trust - it helps to fund our annual award programmes and we thank those who attend for helping us to continue our support of the arts and artists in our community!
Thank you to everyone involved in our Artists in Eden Christmas Special. This bonus event for buyers and artists was back again at the beginning of December following the success of the inaugural Christmas Special in 2022. Artists were invited to offer small works for sale as a nod to the festive season, with all works measuring no more than 200mm x 200mm and all offered at a flat rate of $200 each. This was a chance for the community to watch artists at work, listen to live music and to purchase that special gift in time for Christmas. All sales also directly benefitted the artists, with a higher than usual proportion of the sale price going directly back to the artists as an end-of-year thank you from Eden Arts.
